Memorial on the role of Gampo Abbey
And the Monastic Tradition
Within the Kingdom of Shambhala

SHAMBHALA
THE KALAPA COURT

The monastic tradition is one of the living jewels of the Kingdom of Shambhala. The presence of the monastic community in Shambhala is an essential aspect of the protection and propagation of the glory of Shambhala. It is a source of cultivating great virtue for the entire mandala.

It is the heart aspiration of the lineage of Sakyongs that the roots of the monastic tradition, first planted in Shambhala by the Druk Sakyong, the Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, should be deeply established in the kingdom, carefully nurtured and fearlessly protected.

For Shambhala truly to manifest, it must be a kingdom in which those wishing to follow the monastic tradition are welcomed and encouraged. They must be supported in this profound intention. All those who have gone further and fully embraced monastic ordination, must be assured that Shambhala is the spiritual homeland that supports them as practitioners on the path to enlightenment. Shambhala must enable them to live in conditions that support their practice, encourage their collective communities, and inspire them to fulfill their limitless vows to benefit others.

Within the stream of monastic practice, Gampo Abbey holds the status of a Lineage Institution within the Shambhala Mandala, preserving the natural dignity of the monastic tradition. It is a centre of teaching and practice in which the observance of monastic discipline forms the core of the formal practice, and the ground for deepening the profound view and experience of the Mahayana.

By this memorial, given and sealed under my hand, I, Sakyong Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche, hereby affirm that for all time the monastic tradition shall be preserved and further cultivated within Shambhala under the personal protection of the Sakyongs. As Sakyong I shall encourage the members and patrons of the mandala to make offerings to this worthy institution and thereby encourage the monastic community to adhere to their vows, thus ensuring their own joy and liberation as well as adding to the dignity of the kingdom.

By this memorial I further proclaim that gifts and funds given by our members and donors to support the monastic tradition and Gampo Abbey shall always be used solely for that purpose, and that the lands blessed by the presence of the abbey shall always be dedicated to the purposes of the Abbey and the monastic tradition, and may not under any circumstances be used otherwise.

Given under my hand and sealed,

This 21st day of the 8th month of the Fire Dog year, 17 th Rabjung,
