Retreat Phases
Since 1990 there have been three cycles of retreat groups set in motion by Thrangu Rinpoche. Each cycle consists of two groups which alternated being in and out of retreat. Groups A through D have completed their cycles. Starting in 2004, the third cycle which is currently underway includes Group E and Group F. Since both have completed their first module, it will be not be offered again until the next cycle of retreat begins, in 2010.
“Phase One” Module : a nine month retreat divided into three main practices, each three months long: 1. The guru yogas of Gampopa, Milarepa and Marpa; 2. Konchok Chidu; 3. Pointing Out the Dharmakaya mahamudra investigations.
“Phase Two Module”: Yidam practice
This is a ten month program which focuses on the inner and secret practices of both Vajrayogini and Chakrasamvara. This section of the retreat allows sadhakas to complete their Chakrasamvara practice requirements, and at the same time to learn from commentaries and manuals that go beyond what is normally practiced in our community. The five recitations of inner vajrayogini are an introduction to chandali practice. During phase two, each of the sadhanas include individual practice, drupchen and fire offerings. Everyone is surprised to learn that the spacious, hard wood floored upper storey of the “Shedra House” next to Sopa Choling, where visiting Rinpoche’s are housed, is also a fire puja shrine room.
Andrew Holocek, a former retreatant, comments “Drupchen, or extended group practice, is a formidable and enriching aspect of the Sopa Choling experience. Elaborate mandalas are created, vast offerings are prepared, and extensive feasts are performed. Without group efforts, the rewards of drupchen are unavailable. It is said that in group practice the power of one’s practice is amplified by the number of people involved, and this premise is harnessed to its fullest.”
Group F is for women only. Sadhakas who join the retreat for phase two are first to be accepted for the phase three module.
“Phase Three” Module: Six Dharmas of Naropa
The third phase of retreat is dedicated to Six Dharmas of Naropa. In 2008 this module will be offered as a seven month ‘stand alone’ program if there are vacant rooms.
In 2009, the Six Dharmas module, for women only will be six months.
“Phase Four” Module: five month Jinasagara and Vajrakrishnachola retreat.
